The 40th edition of golf’s Ryder Cup gets underway this Friday, September 26 with the European team looking to make it three titles in a row over their American counterparts. The 2014 version will be taking place at the Gleneagles Resort (PGA Centenary Course), in Perthshire, Scotland. This par-72 course was designed by Jack Nicklaus back in 1993 and is a total of 7,243 yards. The 2012 event was both glorious and gut-wrenching as the United States threw away the largest final-day lead in 85 years of Ryder Cup history in a dramatic climax at the Medinah Country Club, Illinois and this year’s competition is sure to be just as fiercely fought. The Europeans have won five of the past six tournaments and seven of the last nine with the Americans last capturing it in 2008 in Kentucky.

Tom Watson will captain the USA with Paul McGinley acting as the skipper of the European side. The current star of this Ryder Cup will be none other than Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, who comes into the event as the top-ranked golfer on the planet. McIlroy has been on fire recently with six top-eight finishes in his last seven tournaments. He won three in a row starting with this year’s British Open and ended up by winning the PGA Championship, which was the fourth major victory of his career. McIlroy also tied for second place at last week’s PGA Tour Championship.
The highest-ranked American is 44-year-old Jim Furyk, who comes in at number five in the world. He hasn’t won an event in the past four years, but had an excellent 2014 season by making the cut in all 21 tournaments he played in . He finished as runner up on four occasions and led the PGA Tour with eight top-five finishes. He also managed to win close to $6 million this year, which was good for number three on the highest-earners list. Furyk tied for second place with McIlroy at last week’s Tour Championship.
When it comes to Ryder Cup experience, Lee Westwood of Europe has had the most success as his record stands at 18-13-6 over his eight appearances. Sergio Garcia hasn’t performed too badly either by going 16-8-4 in six tournaments. If you’re looking for the golfer with the best winning percentage though then Europe’s Ian Poulter takes the prize as he has an 82 per cent winning record by going 12-3 in four events. Also, he hasn’t been beaten in singles play as he’s won all four matches. American Phil Mickelson has also done well and as earned the most points by an American player. He’s earned 17 points by going 14-18-6. Mickelson will be teaming up again with Keegan Bradley as they went 3-0 in the 2012 tournament and also went 2-1-1 record at Presidents Cup last year.
Each team has three rookies on it this year with Jimmy Walker, Patrick Reed, and Jordan Spieth playing for America and Victor Dubuisson, Stephen Gallacher and Jamie Donaldson representing Europe. The format sees each team playing four Four-ball and four Foursome matches on Friday and Saturday. The event then concludes Sunday with a dozen singles matches.
